SHOWING IM_MOBILITY - Mobilität(sparadigmen) in künstlerischer und kuratorischer Praxis

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung IM_MOBILITIES geben die Künstlerinnen Rheim Alkadhi und Joana Moll im Künstlerinnengespräch Showing im_mobility Einblicke in ihre künstlerische Praxis. Während Rheim Alkadhis Praxis meist durch ortsspezifisches Arbeiten und einer damit verbundenen Bewegung durch physische Geografien gekennzeichnet ist, verorten sich Joana Molls Arbeiten im digitalen Raum. Beide beschäftigen sich auf subversive und sehr unterschiedliche Weise mit Grenzen und Grenzkonzepten und wurden in verschiedenen Kontexten öffentlich.
Im Anschluss an das Künstlerinnengespräch werden in einer Diskussion mit den Kuratorinnen der Ausstellung die Konditionen künstlerischer Arbeit als mobile Praxis untersucht sowie die Auswirkung von kuratorischen Gesten und die Teilnahme an thematischen Gruppenausstellungen auf die Rezeption und Einordnung ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit erörtert. Wie werden Erfahrungen, Ideen und Konzepte von Mobilität in künstlerischen Arbeiten und Ausstellungen thematisiert? Zu welchen diskursiven, künstlerischen und kuratorischen Repräsentationen führt dies? Welche Anordnungen und Bilder ergeben sich daraus und wie verändert sich ihre Bedeutung je nach Kontext, in dem sie sichtbar werden?
Rheim Alkadhi arbeitet unter unbeständigen Bedingungen und in konstanter Bewegung zwischen sich verändernden kulturellen und sozialen Kontexten. Sie verwendet verschiedene Medien, arbeitet manchmal text- und manchmal körperbasiert. In ihren Arbeiten eröffnet sie auf poetische Weise vielschichtige Perspektiven auf Grenzen, Migration, Gender und die Intimität sozialer Beziehungen, die dazu veranlassen, Sehgewohnheiten zu hinterfragen. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien und nahm an Artist-in-Residence Programmen teil, unter anderem bei der Townhouse Gallery in Kairo (2009) und der Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart (2015). Ihre Arbeiten waren zuletzt unter anderem auf der Qalandiya International (2016), der Shanghai Biennale (2016) und der Sharjah Biennale (2015) zu sehen.

Joana Moll ist Künstlerin und Wissenschaftlerin aus Barcelona/Berlin. Sie forscht zur Materialität des Internets, zu Überwachung, Online Tracking und Interfaces. Sie ist die Mitbegründerin der Critical Interface Politics Research Group am HANGAR (Barcelona), Mitbegründerin des Institute for the Advancement of Popular Automatisms und Mitglied des antiAtlas des Frontières. Ihre Arbeiten wurden weltweit in verschiedenen Institutionen gezeigt. Derzeit lehrt sie an der Universität Potsdam und der Escola Superior d'Art de Vic (Barcelona).

Showing im_mobility - mobility(paradigms) in Artistic and Curatorial Practice
with RHEIM ALKADHI and JOANA MOLL
Rheim Alkadhi und Joana Moll speak about their artistic practices: while Rheim Alkadhi’s practice is mostly characterized through on-location work and movement over physical geographies, Joana Moll’s is located in the digital realm. However, both of them concern themselves with concepts of borders and distances, making works that operate in sometimes subversively and which have been exhibited in very different contexts.
After both presentations, the discussion among the artists and exhibition’s curators will centre on the conditions of artistic work as a mobile praxis, as well as how curatorial gestures and the participation in thematic group exhibitions affect the reception and categorization of Alkadhi’s and Moll’s artistic work. How are experiences, ideas and concepts of mobility thematized in artistic practice and exhibition making? What discursive, artistic and curatorial gestures do they open? What categorizations and images arise when working on the topic, and how do meanings change in relation to the specific contexts in which they are shown?
Rheim Alkadhi works within unfixed parameters, residing itinerantly and variously amid geographies that are culturally distinct from each other, themselves undergoing change. Using various media, texts and sometimes the body, her work opens up highly diverse perspectives on borders, migration, gender and intimacy in a very poetic manner, and lead to the questioning of visual habits. She received numerous residencies and fellowships, including the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo (2009) and the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart (2015). Recent interventions include her participation in Qalandiya International (2016), Shanghai Biennale (2016) and Sharjah Biennial (2015). Currently she lives and works in Berlin.

Joana Moll’s main research topics include Internet materiality, surveillance, online tracking and critical interfaces. She has lectured, performed and exhibited her work in different museums, art centers, universities, festivals and publications around the world. Moll is the co-founder of the Critical Interface Politics Research Group at HANGAR (Barcelona), co-founder of The Institute for the Advancement of Popular Automatisms and member of the scientific and artistic committee of the antiAtlas des Frontières. She currently resides in Barcelo and Berlin and is a visiting lecturer at Universität Potsdam (Potsdam, Germany) and the Escola Superior d'Art de Vic (Barcelona, Spain).
