"It is three in the morning. I am sitting on the floor in the corridor of my apartment in Kyiv. There are loud booms outside. Ukrainian air defence forces are shooting down Russia’s Kalibr and Kinzhal missiles and UAVs. This night nobody is hurt in the city, only debris damages several parked cars... Every night is different; every morning brings different news from all over Ukraine. Nobody died today in my city, but what is the death toll in the east?
Fifteen months have passed since the escalation of the war in Ukraine began. Every day we become different. We get used to the sounds of air defence systems; we can distinguish missiles from drones by how they sound; we have a different reaction to death reports; we sincerely enjoy every morning but do not plan anything for months ahead.
The photos demonstrate the transformation in space, and time that has sped up and acquired a different meaning. They reflect changes and stick in memory. These stories could happen anywhere, but are now happening in Ukraine."

Nach der Annexion der Krim 2014 und der anschließenden Besetzung von Gebieten im Donbas, erreicht die imperialistische und patriarchale Gewalt durch Russlands Staatspräsident Wladimir Putin eine weitere Eskalationsebene. Am 24. Februar 2022 beginnt der Angriffskrieg gegen das ukrainische Territorium, den hier lebenden Menschen und die Demokratie. Seither ist der Krieg im zweitgrößten Staat Europas allgegenwärtig, so wie der starke und solidarische Widerstandsgeist seiner vielfältigen Zivilbevölkerung.
Die Ausstellung versammelt Reflektionen ukrainischer Dokumentarfotograf:innen und Fotokünstler:innen, welche innerhalb und außerhalb des Landes zu Betroffenen geworden sind. Die Werke erzählen von einer Bewahrung sicherer Orte durch Erinnerungen, fangen hoffnungsvolle Zukünfte ein und widmen sich zugleich der bedeutenden Aufgabe einer Dokumentation des Kriegsgeschehens und seiner Verbrechen. Die Ausstellung bleibt eine Momentaufnahme, sie ist eine Annäherung an die Realitäten der Fotograf:innen, deren Vergangenheiten und Gegenwarten innerhalb sich stetig verändernder Umstände, an ihren Schmerz, an ihre Kämpfe um Selbstbehauptung und Freiheit.
Das Projekt ist in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Odesa Photo Days, deren Direktorin Kateryna Radchenko und dem Verein SPACE TRANSFORMER sowie den Kooperationspartner:innen Cinémathèque Leipzig, IDEAL artspace und galerie KUB, entstanden. Das internationale Festival für zeitgenössische Fotografie Odesa Photo Days, 2015 gegründet, kann seit 2022 nicht mehr stattfinden. Das Festivalteam ist daher bestrebt, durch internationale Kooperationen die Solidarität und Unterstützung mit den ukrainischen Fotograf:innen zu verstärken und gleichzeitig die Sichtbarkeit für die aktuelle Situation im Land aufrechtzuerhalten.

After the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent occupation of territories in the Donbas, the imperialist and patriarchal violence by Russia's President Vladimir Putin reaches another level of escalation. On February 24th, 2022, a full-scale war was initiated against Ukrainian territory, its people and democracy. Since then, the war has been omnipresent in Europe's second largest state, as has the strong and solidarity-based spirit of resistance of its diverse civilian population.
The exhibition assembles reflections from Ukrainian documentary photographers and photography-based artists who have been affected both inside and outside the country. The works tell of a preservation of safe places through memories, capture hopeful futures and concurrently dedicate themselves to the important task of documenting the events of war and its crimes. The exhibition remains a snapshot, an approach to the realities of the photographers, their pasts and presences within ever-changing circumstances, their pain, and their struggles for self-assertion and freedom.
The project was developed in close cooperation with the Odesa Photo Days, its director Kateryna Radchenko and the association SPACE TRANSFORMER, along with cooperation partners Cinémathèque Leipzig, IDEAL artspace, and galerie KUB. The international festival of contemporary photography Odesa Photo Days, founded in 2015, can no longer take place since the beginning of the full-scale war. Therefore, the festival team is striving to strengthen solidarity and support for Ukrainian photographers through international cooperation, and at the same time, maintain visibility for the current situation in the country.

Проект був розроблений у тісній співпраці з Odesa Photo Days, його директоркою Катериною Радченко та об'єднанням SPACE TRANSFORMER, а також партнерами Cinémathèque Leipzig, IDEAL artspace та галереєю KUB. Міжнародний фестиваль сучасної фотографії Odesa Photo Days, заснований у 2015 році, з початком повномасштабної війни не може відбуватися. Тому команда фестивалю прагне посилити солідарність і підтримку українських фотографок:ів через міжнародну співпрацю, і в той же час зберегти видимість актуальної ситуації в країні.
